Our Programs

Disabled Sailing Program:

Each summer, over 1,500 disabled people learn the skills of sailing in our fleet of specially adapted sailboats. The Sail To Prevail fleet includes five 20-foot “Freedom” sailboats, 23-foot “Sonars,” a “Martin 16,” and most unique, “EASTERNER” a 66-foot, handicap-accessible, America’s Cup racing boat – the only one of its kind. Our programs strongly encourage disabled individuals to be active participants, steering the boat as well as opportunities to grind winches and trim sails. The measurable outcomes demonstrate self-confidence, leadership and teamwork.

The Americas Cup Program - EASTERNER:
In 2008, Sail To Prevail was the recipient of an extraordinary gift, the 66-foot, America’s Cup yacht Easterner. The first ever adaptation of its kind, Sail To Prevail has engineered her for use by disabled children and adults, including a skipper’s position for a quadriplegic or a paraplegic. The adaptations also offer “pit” and trimming positions. This America’s Cup boat is the first in history to compete with a combined disabled and able-bodied crew working together as a team by participating in the 12 Meter World Championship in 2009 – even winning a race. In addition to competitive sailing, Easterner regularly provides therapeutic sailing for children with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, or pediatric cancer.

Disabled Sailing & Recreational Camp ‘Confidence is Cool’:
Our day camps are offered to physically disabled children, ages 7-17, and are administered in six one-week sessions. Participants are able to enjoy two days of sailing a week. Those with no experience are welcome. Activities on other days include swimming, biking (hand-cycling), surfing, kayaking, and field trips to museums, aquariums and zoos. Camps are designed to push boundaries, promote new friendships, encourage mentorships, build confidence, and emphasize fun!

Disabled Sailing Instructor Training – US Sailing Certification:
This is an internally generated instructional program that is not offered anywhere else in the county. Sail To Prevail teaches instructors to work with people with disabilities certifying them as US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructors.

Paralympic Regattas and Training Program:
Comprehensive Paralympic Regattas and Training Program enhances individual and team programs for aspiring Paralympians. In addition to racing, components include fundraising, logistical and other ingredients for a winning program. Directed by two-time Paralympic medalist Tom Brown, multi-sport Paralympian Bradley Johnson and Paralympic Skipper and Sail To Prevail CEO, Paul Callahan.
